No, you can be self-referred. You don’t have to see a doctor before visiting a physiotherapist.
You can see a physiotherapist whenever you need an assessment or treatment for your body.
Below could be a few signs that it’s time to see a physiotherapist:
- You’re getting a lot of muscle pain
- Your mobility is restricted
- You’re getting headaches
- You keep rolling your ankle
Initial appointment: 45 minutes
Standard appointment (follow up): 30 minutes
Standard extended appointment: 45 minutes
- If you are referred by a doctor or general practitioner, you will need to bring the doctor’s referral letter. No referral is requested for normal appointments, but you must have a referral to access certain funding including Medicare for those with chronic medical conditions.
- If you have recently completed X-rays, ultrasound or MRI, please bring them in.
- Medicare Card (patients eligible for Enhanced Primary Care or EPC), Private health fund card if available. We can process rebates on the spot for most of the health funds.
- Workers Compensation Insurance or CTP insurance details (if applicable).
You may be asked to walk, run or move around as a part of our assessments and treatment plan. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes for this purpose.
Please bring or wear shorts if you have lower limb issues.

Yes, it can be. But certain conditions need to be met.
A Medicare rebate can be claimed on physiotherapy under the EPC Program, also known as the Enhanced Primary Care Program.
The criteria include
- the pain or condition you suffer from needs to be a ‘chronic’ condition that lasts more than 3 months.
- you need to have the appropriate referral from a GP, who needs to send you to a specific physiotherapy clinic.
Many private health insurance extras policies include physiotherapy cover, please check with your health fund or private health insurance policy details.
