Scoliosis
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves abnormally, affecting the shape and alignment of the spine, ribs, and trunk. These curves can vary in severity and may be visible as uneven shoulders, a rib hump, or leaning to one side. While some cases are mild and require only monitoring, others may result in discomfort, breathing difficulties, or posture concerns, needing specialised treatment.
There are two main types of scoliosis:
- Functional Scoliosis – Caused by external factors like muscle imbalances or leg length discrepancies, and often reversible once the underlying cause is addressed.
- Structural Scoliosis – Caused by inherent abnormalities in the spine’s structure. This type is more complex and often requires long-term management.

When should I seek treatment for Scoliosis?
At Better Life Allied Health, we recommend booking a scoliosis appointment with our physiotherapist at one of our physio clinics in Chatswood, St Leonards and Burwood if you:
- Notice visible changes in posture such as uneven shoulders, hips, or a rib hump
- Experience back pain, muscle fatigue, or stiffness
- Have breathing issues or reduced lung capacity
- Feel tingling or numbness due to nerve compression
- Have been diagnosed with scoliosis and want to prevent further curve progression
- Are in a growth phase (e.g. adolescence), when curves can worsen quickly
- Want to improve your appearance or posture for aesthetic or functional reasons
